Cold Station 12
Nov. 11th, 2004 10:24 pmThe fourth season of Enterprise was supposed to be much improved now that Manny Coto is in charge. The Temporal Cold War has been retroactively deleted, and that's a good thing, but what the heck happened to security? It looks like at some point between the present day and Enterprise, everyone with any knowledge of security (either physical or IS) was executed and all the books were burned. Crazy, but how else do you explain the pathetic security practiced in the current storyline? (Alternatively, I suppose it's possible that none of the writers have had an account on an alarm system of any size, to include a home system, but that seems just as far-fetched as the other explanation. On the gripping hand, maybe the writers are now completely unwilling to depart from continuity—aliens taking over the ship's computer were a regular event in TNG—but while attention to continuity is generally good, sometimes it does need to be disregarded.)
I was really hoping for a renunciation of the Srebrenica rules of engagement, which appear to be Federation policy. Consequently, Archer's line in "Home" really made my day: "Jeffries was right; we needed those weapons—and a hell of a lot more." But then there's the whole thing with allowing the augments to take over Enterprise, allowing the augments to take over the station, etc.; it appears that Starfleet isn't doing a particularly good job of force protection. But at least they're trying now.
