A good year for sane government
Having not lived in New York for three years, it just came to my attention that they finally scrapped the law banning alcohol sales on the Lord's Day. The new law isn't perfect—stores can still only be open six days a week, they're not allowed to be open before 1200 or after 2100 on Sunday, and grocery stores still can't sell alcohol other than beer, but it's at least sucking an order of magnitude less.
Now the Maryland legislature needs to fix the law to allow grocery stores to sell booze and make liquor licenses valid for any business hours permitted by zoning (thus getting rid of Baltimore's ban on Sunday sales). Good thing I live in Howard, which isn't quite as bassackwards, and is quite happy to reap the extra tax revenue generated by its neighbor's Wahhabism.
